The aim of the Master Module named Licht Punkt Strich is the curation and creation of a public multimedia art exhibition, which will be hosted at Design Forum Steirmark in March of 2023. The goal of this exhibition is the transformation of spaces through analog light sources, digital projection methods and carefully chosen materials. In this work we want to combine light sources with digital media to create novel, exciting, and immersive special experiences. To achieve our goal, we will work with state-of-the-art video projections- and computational design tools. As a source of inspiration, we will look to contemporary media artist such as Refik Anadol, Team Lab, Mario Klingemann, Lawrence Lek etc…

The students will learn different methods and approaches from such fields as: Creative coding, video animation, video production, light design, projection techniques, exhibition curation and conceptualization.  One of multiple teachers in the module will be the Austrian multimedia artist collective OchoReSotto (https://ochoresotto.com).

The interweaving and overlapping of virtual and physical space offers a multitude of novel possibilities in architecture. The ever-expanding repertoire of digital input and output media has long been part of our built environment. It can distract and annoy us, but in the best cases, it can also provide us with compelling new spatial qualities and experiences. The same is true for architecture in virtual space, which, for example in computer games, have become a cultural mass phenomenon for some time now and are visited and experienced by more people than would even be possible with real buildings.
This advanced module explores current phenomena at the interface between the physical and the virtual world and critically examines them for their architectural potential. Depending on the current topic, so-called game engines or virtual reality or augmented reality toolkits can be used, or ways of designing hybrid spaces, such as digitally controlled sensors and actuators, and their programming are taught on the basis of concrete projects.

After successful completion of the course, students will have an in-depth theoretical and technical understanding of current applications of digital media in architecture and advanced knowledge and skills in the use of selected software in these areas. They will also have practical experience in developing design projects at the intersection of physical and virtual space.
