Ivan Skušek came to China as a K.u.K. naval officer and is considered the most important Slovenian collector of Chinese art. For decades, he and his wife Tsuneko Kondo-Kawase lived surrounded by furnishings from the collection in spatial situations that can most aptly be described as a “lived-in museum”. At the centre of this cultural time bubble in the centre of Ljubljana was a chest of drawers on which an extraordinary collection of Buddhist figures of the male tantric meditation deity Vajrabhairava and the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara were placed. This is the starting point for an FWF-funded project to digitise the historical situation using archive images and images of the objects, which are now housed in the Slovene Ethnographic Museum (SEM) in Ljubljana. However, the project is concerned not only with the digitisation of the lived-in museum, but also with the history of the collection and its objects, which can be told in a completely different way.
