The course (summer school) ‘FROM DESIGN TO PRODUCTION’ is a 1:1 design course, which will be held in two compact blocks in summer of 2021.
The aim is to design and realise a bicycle rest area on the Enns Cycle Path – R7 in the municipality of Irdning-Donnersbachtal. The client for the project is the Regional Management Liezen District (RML).
The design and realisation of the rest area are divided into two sections:
First section: From 19 July to 29 July 2021, we will visit the building site where the bicycle rest area will be constructed. Afterwards, we will work as a team in Graz to create a design for the rest area. The building material for the rest area will mainly be wood. We will use parametric design tools such as Rhino and Grasshopper and produce small prototypes and models of the finished design in the IAM workshop.
Second section: Mid-to-late September: In the second section of the course, we will work with a local carpentry firm to turn the design into reality. To do this, we will travel to the Ennstal valley for about a week, produce the components on site and then build the rest area in the municipality of Irdning-Donnersbachtal.
As part of this course, students will learn practical skills – from the initial design to the final realisation. The lecturers will supervise the students throughout all stages of the project. It is also important that the students engage with the wishes and needs of the clients and learn how to communicate with the technical project partners in a subject-specific manner. The course focuses on working with wood as a building material and on planning and implementation. All of this is done in combination with parametric design processes and rapid prototyping techniques.
This course can be credited with 4 ECTS points as part of the free elective in the Bachelor’s or Master’s programme.
